I have shot a short narrative film in 4K (24 fps, apple prores). I know I don't need to output it in 4K for most film festival venues.

I started editing it in a 4K sequence, but then found I wanted to scale up (blow up) a few shots here and there.

The question is: If i scale up, say, around 10 out of 80 clips in the sequence anywhere from 110% to 180% in a 4K sequence, then output it as 1920x1080p . . . will the scaled up shots be lower resolution (and potentially noticeable) than if I rebuilt the film in a 1920x1080 sequence, scaling down all the 4K shots by 50% and then scaled up the 10 or so I need blown up, then output as per the sequence setting of 1920x1080?

Thanks in advance for any replies to this little tech brain teaser!

If you scale 4k clips in 4k sequence, you are losing quality, regardless of resolution you export at.

If final delivery is to be HD, then edit 4k clips in 1080p sequence and you can do a lot of scaling with no loss then.

    Thanks

Scaling up beyond 100% will reduce visible quality. Scaling back down during export will not bring it back.

If you decide to go the route of up-converting your 1920x1080 footage to 3840x2160, use either After Effect's Detail-preserving Upscale effect (easy enough to do if you have the Creative Cloud subscription that includes everything) or Red Giant Instant 4K ($99 plug-in for Premiere Pro and After Effects with a free trial: Buy Red Giant Instant 4K | Download the free trial ). I'd test each option. I've found that Instant 4K almost always looks just a little better than Detail-reserving Upscale.

All footage is 4K, no 1080p sources involved

Oh... yeah... it's 4k source being scaled up inside of 4k. Got it!

Same thing applies: Use "Detail-preserving Upscale" in After Effects.

Great answers everyone thanks. That is what I figured, but hoped maybe there was some preservation of the 4K details if shrunk and then returned. Thanks everyone!
