I like it a fair bit. I haven't played it in a while( I like to play it right through). There are plenty of good/ great tracks to savour- rekindling the flame of Jehovah I love. The last track ( I bypass it on disc one) is awesome. Performance/ sound is top notch.

Clive James was a great writer and broadcaster, very popular on British TV when I was growing up. His TV column was usually very sharp, but, as with almost all "great writers", he seemed to have a different perspective on film music from us geeks, almost as if he believed there were more things in life.

Indeed. He was an Australian who came to the UK in the sixties and grew to be a witty, funny and cogent writer and broadcaster. I owned a book of his TV criticism which was caustic (usually justified) and very funny. He's not with us anymore, and, sadly, neither is the quality of his erudition and humour, which was sometimes beautifully conveyed.

I remember giving this a chance many years ago (via a CD-R sent to me by a fellow fan), but it didn't quite do it for me, so I kinda gave up on it at the time. Maybe it's time for a revisit.

Just the kind of response I'd expect. You just keep right on Thorring, Thor. QB VII vs QB VII vs QB VII (49)

QBVII is a great score. Won a Emmy for a reason, it deserved it. I actually like the Kaddish better on the suite recording than on the complete Tadlow recording.

QB is a Goldsmith score I've never really liked that much.
I had the LP back in the 80s and played it a few times, but never as much as his other 'cooler' stuff.
Then I bought the CD (Intrada?) of the old LP and still only played it on the odd occasion.
And then I bought the 2 disc Tadlow re-recording (which sounds great and like a proper film score performance, so I don't think you will have any issues there, Graham) and have probably played that about 2-3 times since.
I'm not much of a fan of Jewish music, with its um-chitty-bum-bum style lyrics and progressions.
It just doesn't do it for me, although I really enjoy MASADA, but that comes at me more like a proper Goldsmith action score.

You surprise me, Kev! To me, Masada is much more consistent in its "Jewish" sound, while that is only one facet of QBVII. The half of the story dealing with the Anthony Hopkins character doesn't have much of that, certainly. And if it's just the "um-chitty-bum-bum style" you have an issue with (I guess that would be like "Rekindling the Flame of Jehovah"?) then I don't think that even describes all the Jewish music in QBVII -- it certainly doesn't describe the Kaddish, or the horror scoring for the Jadwiga flashbacks.

The fanfare refrain in QB is decent and there are some nice tracks here and there, but it's just something I'm never really gonna love, based on my own settings.

I suspect you could edit the Tadlow down to a 1 hour program or so, which you would enjoy all the way through.

It's better than DAVID LEV, but nowhere near MASADA level greatness.

I might even agree with this... if Goldsmith had actually been able to finish Masada himself! But instead he got to do all the set up, while Morton Stevens got all the most juicy parts of the story to score! I'd be happy to live in the universe where Goldsmith scored all four parts, and got to bring all his thematic material to its full climactic development. I probably wouldn't hesitate to declare Masada his magnum opus instead of QBVII. But even then, it wouldn't be as varied a work.

Yavar

I probably could do with a whittle listen of the Tadlow edition, Yavar, but I doubt I would get it as high as one hour.
I remember finding the music dull in many places and nowhere near as exciting or in-your-face as MASADA*, although that has a lot to do with the subject matter, I suppose.

*I'm talking about the original MCA album here, which is superb to my ears.

I've just popped the 2disc edition into my player for a revisit of this score.
Track 2/Escape seems to be played at a much faster tempo than the version I remember on the original album.
Also, it's lacking that...snarly aggression that Goldsmith often brought to his action tracks.
This is a smart, well performed version of this score, but it's almost too pretty and polished.
It's lacking that rawness and anger that one feels in the original recording.
It's also interesting to read, in the notes, how Goldsmith felt quite protective of the Jewish projects he worked on and felt that one had TO BE Jewish to do justice to the material.
I find that interesting in that John Williams (not Jewish) has written what many consider the pinnacle of scoring for a Jewish themed film with SCHINDLER'S LIST.
I wonder what Goldsmith thought about Williams' score to SCHINDLER'S?
Did he ever go on record to discuss the Spielberg film or Williams score?
Anyway, I'll carry on with this set but I can see me digging out the old Intrada CD for some comparison and gnarly feelings.
And Graham, has yours arrived with the spuds yet?

I seem to remember some quote about him wanting to DO that film, if given the chance to score any film in the past. But I can't remember any evaluation of the Williams score itself.

Yes, though I'd have to check where. I do remember Goldsmith mentioned SCHINDLER'S LIST as one of the movies that he would have loved to do, but he also spoke highly of John Williams' score.

From a 1995 America Online Live Chat hosted by Ford Thaxton where fans could ask JG questions:

Question: Mr. Goldsmith, what's your opinion of John Williams' work? Are you a fan? Do you feel it's too commercial? Has he lost his touch since "Raider's March"?

JG: I like John Williams' work very much and I hardly think he's lost his touch. Listen to "Schindler's List".

(I couldn't find the interview online any more but I printed it out back in the day)

There was another interview that I can't find right now where he was asked of the films he didn't score which one he would have liked to have scored the most and his answer was "Schindler's List".

Hurdy, interesting to read your thoughts on the "more polished" "Escape" track. I'll go into this new listening experience with as open a mind as I can muster.

And no - no spuds, no CD! I have it on hold at the border crossing, waiting for Oliver Nelson's gunfighter and a couple of other stragglers to catch up, so that they can all travel on the same stagecoach north together.

I have the Intrada CD of the LP version (was the LP a rerecording, as was often done with soundtrack albums back in the day or the actual tracks?). The sound is of course showing its age but I find it a very visceral, emotive performance.

I also have the Prometheus complete Nic Raine recording and although it is played and recorded very well, I find I am not as emotionally involved in it so much, when listening. That's on me, not a fault of the recording or performance at all.

I'm not sure about the original LP being a re-recording, Mr Kent?
The tech credits still say it was performed and recorded in Rome (Yavar would know for sure).
I'm playing it now and it's much better than I remembered.
The sound ain't bad either. Quite full and upfront. Joe Tarantino did a great job on the old LP.
I notice Journey Into The Desert is titled Visit To The Sheik on the Tadlow edition. But there is a track titled Journey/Desert on the Tadlow (unless I read the track number wrong).
And The Escape is a pretty fast tempo on the original album too, so that might have been wonky memory. But it does lack the aggression and rawness.
The choir in The Holocaust sure does remind me of THE FINAL CONFLICT, which would follow.

I still prefer MASADA though QB VII vs QB VII vs QB VII (118)

You know, my favourite Jerry in Jewish faith mode is actually The Going Up Of David Lev. As for Masada, now having the Morton Stevens tracks (though often based on Jerry's material), I find Morton's stuff better than Jerry's for the miniseries. Uh oh, I'm for it now!

I came around (a bit) on DAVID LEV after buying the BSX for £2 on CD.
I'd only previously had the horrible sounding boot and BSX/James Nelson did a nice fix-up job on it.
But it still ranks pretty low in the Goldsmith/Jewish chart for me (I might even prefer his Jewish WALTONS episode more).
