His TV column was usually very sharp, but, as with almost all "great writers", he seemed to have a different perspective on film music from us geeks, almost as if he believed there were more things in life. Indeed. He was an Australian who came to the UK in the sixties and grew to be a witty, funny and cogent writer and broadcaster. I owned a book of his TV criticism which was caustic (usually justified) and very funny. He's not with us anymore, and, sadly, neither is the quality of his erudition and humour, which was sometimes beautifully conveyed. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Posted: | Apr 9, 2024-11:49 AM | | | By: | Yavar Moradi(Member) | QB is a Goldsmith score I've never really liked that much. I had the LP back in the 80s and played it a few times, but never as much as his other 'cooler' stuff. Then I bought the CD (Intrada?) of the old LP and still only played it on the odd occasion. And then I bought the 2 disc Tadlow re-recording (which sounds great and like a proper film score performance, so I don't think you will have any issues there, Graham) and have probably played that about 2-3 times since. I'm not much of a fan of Jewish music, with its um-chitty-bum-bum style lyrics and progressions. It just doesn't do it for me, although I really enjoy MASADA, but that comes at me more like a proper Goldsmith action score. You surprise me, Kev! To me, Masada is much more consistent in its "Jewish" sound, while that is only one facet of QBVII. The half of the story dealing with the Anthony Hopkins character doesn't have much of that, certainly. And if it's just the "um-chitty-bum-bum style" you have an issue with (I guess that would be like "Rekindling the Flame of Jehovah"?) then I don't think that even describes all the Jewish music in QBVII -- it certainly doesn't describe the Kaddish, or the horror scoring for the Jadwiga flashbacks. The fanfare refrain in QB is decent and there are some nice tracks here and there, but it's just something I'm never really gonna love, based on my own settings. I suspect you could edit the Tadlow down to a 1 hour program or so, which you would enjoy all the way through. It's better than DAVID LEV, but nowhere near MASADA level greatness. I might even agree with this... if Goldsmith had actually been able to finish Masada himself! But instead he got to do all the set up, while Morton Stevens got all the most juicy parts of the story to score! I'd be happy to live in the universe where Goldsmith scored all four parts, and got to bring all his thematic material to its full climactic development. I probably wouldn't hesitate to declare Masada his magnum opus instead of QBVII. But even then, it wouldn't be as varied a work. I wonder what Goldsmith thought about Williams' score to SCHINDLER'S? Did he ever go on record to discuss the Spielberg film or Williams score? From a 1995 America Online Live Chat hosted by Ford Thaxton where fans could ask JG questions: Question: Mr. Goldsmith, what's your opinion of John Williams' work? Are you a fan? Do you feel it's too commercial? Has he lost his touch since "Raider's March"? JG: I like John Williams' work very much and I hardly think he's lost his touch. Listen to "Schindler's List". (I couldn't find the interview online any more but I printed it out back in the day) There was another interview that I can't find right now where he was asked of the films he didn't score which one he would have liked to have scored the most and his answer was "Schindler's List". | | | | | | | Posted: | May 1, 2024-9:35 AM | | | By: | Nicolai P. Ah, yes, it was the AOL chat I was referring to up there... AOL... no wonder I couldn't place right away where he said that. I have not thought about AOL in a long time. | | | | | | | | | | Posted: | May 2, 2024-1:32 AM | | | By: | Graham Watt(Member) | I've just popped the 2disc edition into my player for a revisit of this score. Track 2/Escape seems to be played at a much faster tempo than the version I remember on the original album. Also, it's lacking that...snarly aggression that Goldsmith often brought to his action tracks. This is a smart, well performed version of this score, but it's almost too pretty and polished. It's lacking that rawness and anger that one feels in the original recording. And Graham, has yours arrived with the spuds yet? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hurdy, interesting to read your thoughts on the "more polished" "Escape" track. I'll go into this new listening experience with as open a mind as I can muster. And no - no spuds, no CD! I have it on hold at the border crossing, waiting for Oliver Nelson's gunfighter and a couple of other stragglers to catch up, so that they can all travel on the same stagecoach north together. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | General Discussion:QB VII vs QB VII vs QB VII | | First Post |
